Emphasis was placed on the
type of hair used in relation to the anatomy of the cactus. Some types of hair were less suitable for the artistic output and of course the process itself.
In considering the anatomy and structure
of the cactus, the aim was to ensure
that the areole would bear hair both centrally
and marginally placing stress on the type
of hair that suited this.
The regeneration rate was taken into account,
the sex of the individual (as regeneration rate
varies between sexes) as well as hair fibres (different
for people of different ethnic backgrounds).
Different hair types can be classified according to their position and form (size, angle of penetrance through skin - bearing in mind the size, angle of penetrance through the areole in the cactus).
The hair more suited had to be terminal (tertiary) hair, coming from large follicles. Terminal hair is usually long, coarse and under the direction of hormones, the vellus (soft, fine, un-pigmented) hair is transformed to terminal hair.
Example of terminal hair would be scalp hair, pubic
hair, armpits etc. Pubic hair is larger in diameter
than scalp hair. Despite the fact that its kinks
make the appearance distinctive (unlike the rigid-like
structure of the cactus spines), this type hair
most "acts" like spines thus appeared
to be the type to use to grow out of the cactus
in terms of its structure. (with the possibility,
of boosting the production of hair with hormones.)
Bearing in mind that, the fact that the regeneration
rate for scalp hair takes longer than the regeneration
rate for pubic hairs.
